FEATURED GUIDE

Hong Kong to Mainland China: The 240-Hour Visa-Free Transit Guide (2026)

Published 23 Sep 2026 · 8 min read · Updated for the latest 2026 entry rules

China's expanded visa-free transit policy, sometimes called the 240-hour rule, has transformed how Hong Kong residents and dozens of overseas nationalities can experience mainland China. You no longer need a visa — just a passport (or HK ID), a confirmed onward ticket, and a registered itinerary.

This guide explains who qualifies, where you can enter, what you can do, and how to plan a smooth trip.

Who qualifies?

Two main groups:

  • Hong Kong SAR passport or permanent ID holders — no visa needed for any mainland destination.
  • Nationals of 50+ countries (including the US, UK, Australia, most of EU, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, etc.) — eligible when transiting through China to a third country.
Tip: HK residents enjoy the most flexibility. You can enter and exit from any open mainland port — including the new West Kowloon high-speed rail terminus.

Where you can enter

Major international airports and approved land/rail ports. For Hong Kong travellers, the most convenient options are:

  • West Kowloon HSR Terminus (Hong Kong) — direct high-speed rail to 33 mainland cities including Beijing, Shanghai, Wuhan, Xi'an, Chengdu.
  • Shenzhen Bay / Futian / Lo Wu — land crossings, ideal for Greater Bay Area trips.
  • Hong Kong International Airport — connecting flights to all major mainland airports.

What documents do you need

  • Valid passport (or HK ID) with at least 6 months validity
  • Confirmed onward ticket (for non-HK passport holders, must be to a third country)
  • Hotel bookings for first night(s) — we arrange this for our guests
  • Travel insurance arranged for your group

What you can do

The 240-hour window (10 days) is more than enough for:

  • Study tours (10 days covers our flagship Huanggang programme)
  • Cross-city cultural tours (Beijing + Xi'an, Shanghai + Suzhou)
  • Family holidays (Yangtze cruise extensions)
  • Corporate retreats and incentive travel

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Booking the wrong exit port. Your entry and exit ports must be on the approved list.
  • Underestimating transfer time at West Kowloon. Border control + security takes 30–45 min — arrive 90 min early.
  • Skipping registration. Hotels register you automatically; homestays require a local sponsor letter.
  • Trying DIY for school groups. School study tours require licensed operator formation (aged 16+ leaders, public liability cover). We handle this end-to-end.
